Setting Mailto: function to Gmail in your browser

When clicking the envelope icon above a contact, you can set this to open to your Gmail account.

Open Chrome, click the three dots next to the URL address bar, and click "Settings." (Fig.1)

On the left-hand side, click "Advanced", click "Privacy & security" and click "Site settings". (Fig.2)

Click "Handlers" and switch on the Ask protocol.(Fig.3)

Open your Gmail in Chrome.
At the end of your URL's address bar, click the Protocol handlers icon that looks like two grey diamonds to open the menu to allow Gmail to open all email links. Click Allow. Click Done. (Fig.4)

Note: If you're still having trouble (for example, the "Protocol handlers" window appears blank with no options), try installing Google's Mailto Extension for Chrome instead .
Open the Firefox menu on the upper-righthand corner of your browser and click Options (Fig.5).
